The Croydon Rangers have won 4 in a row, vanquishing their arch nemesis Monash Warriors 21-14 at home in a replay of their Vic Bowl showdown last year.
In the opening offensive play barely 10 seconds into the match, quarterback Jamie Stafford hit rookie Johnny “Football” Tanuvasa over the middle who raced 56 yards for the touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
The Croydon Rangers have strung together successive victories with a comprehensive 38-0 win at home Saturday against the South Eastern Predators.
In front of a huge crowd at Springfield Reserve Croydon it was another stellar defensive performance with their 2nd straight shutout to go with the victories.
The defense managed four takeaways on home soil as the secondary wreaked havoc on the Predators passing game. Tyson Burgess, back from a year long stint on the sideline with a knee injury proved why he has been selected for Australia with a pair of interceptions. He captured his 2nd late in the 3rd quarter and returned it 2 yards for a touchdown to effectively ice the game. Brock Wellington and Cody Austin would also have an interception whilst Jaye Anderson, Nate Rhoades and Tom Kinloch had a sack each.
The Croydon Rangers have bounced back in week 2 with a sold win 14-0 over the Melbourne Uni Royals.
Keen to avenge their opening round loss and with several ex team mates on the other side the ball the Rangers burst out of the blocks early.
The defense were outstanding for four quarters, pitching a shut out and making several big plays throughout the game.
Liam Fordham was instrumental at free safety with 2 interceptions and a pair of tackles. Captain Mark Doyle lead the defensive effort with 4.5 tackles whilst Tyson Burgess also had an interception and 3 tackles whilst shutting down explosive (and former Ranger) receivers all day. Jaye Anderson had the lone sack for Croydon to go with 3.5 tackles.
