The club celebrated an historic day with both teams registering their first win of the season last Saturday.
The division one side were coming off a disappointing loss in the opening round and were keen to bounce back against their arch nemesis and reigning champion Monash Warriors. Buoyed by a big crowd and looking to set the tone early, Quarterback Mark Ursu threw a long pass on the 3rd play of the game to receiver Neale Oliver who made a great diving catch for a touchdown.
Both teams slogged it out in the rainfor more than a quarter before the Ranger defense force a fumble and linebacker Dan Stewart pounced on the ball and returned it for another touchdown and a 14-0 lead going into half time.
With the passing game all but impossible as the wintery conditions further deteriorated, the Rangers took to the ground in the second half. Behind club champion running back Steve Churchill and the strong offensive line the club powered down the muddy field and fullback Nathan Pasco ran untouched into the endzone. Pasco followed up his hard running on the very next drive with his second touchdown of the day and the Rangers blanked their old foe to win 28-0.
Neale Oliver 32 yard TD pass from Mark Ursu (XPT Good)
Forced Fumble recovered by Dan Stewart returned 27 yards TD (XPT Good)
Nathan Pasco 13 yard TD run (XPT Good)
Nathan Pasco 12 yard TD run (XPT Good)
The division two Rangers took to the field next for their first game of 2011 against one of Gridiron Victoria’s new teams, the Gippsland Gladiators.
Looking to also deliver a quick, early blow, quarterback Vinnie Scheffer threw a deep ball to receiver Travis Browning on the very first play of the game for a touchdown. This pair would continue to terrorise the Gladiators defense, combining twice more for touchdowns as the Rangers raced to a 21-0 lead. Scheffer also combined with junior star Josh Petracca on a touchdown to give the QB an impressive tally of 4 TD passes on the day.
In the second half the Gladiators fought back strongly with a pair of touchdowns, adding some respectability to the scoreboard in their inaugural match to finally succumb 28-12. Congratulations to both Ranger teams for securing strong wins in their first double header at home.
