Week 1 Rangers Come Out On Top

Article updated

The Rangers have opened their 30th season with a hard fought win over the Bendigo Dragons 18-8 and start their season 1-0.

The win started with a 60 yard opening kickoff return by rookie Chris Barnden (below).

Further buoyed by successful stops by the defense, specifically several large tackles for a loss by John Elliot and an interception by Nick Johnston. The Dragons scored in the second quarter on a big punt return and successfully put another 2 points on the board with a 2 point conversion.

The offense however continued to pound the ball deep into Dragon territory on the play of fullback Matt Jan but weren’t able to score again in the first half. The Dragons headed to the main change up 8-6.

After a rousing speech by Coach Richard Garraway the Rangers came back in the second half with a vengeance. Cornerback Cody Austin was able to intercept the ball and stop the momentum. With Matt Jan and Andy Amato combining to drive the ball all the way to the 3 Yard line, Andy was able to deliver the final blow on the drive with a powerhouse 3 yard run for the Rangers 2nd touchdown.

The Dragons attempted to fight back but thanks to Nick Johnston’s second interception the Rangers were able to pick up possession again. Freddie Lewis, in his first game for the Rangers at Quarterback then connected with receiver Ian Box for a 15 yard touchdown. The two point conversion was ultimately unsuccessful.

The Rangers were able to then stop the Dragons last drive and come out with a win, 18-8. Linebacker Mark Doyle’s 150th game brings him into the elite group of only 7 other players to do so. Lineman Sam Weller achieved 50 games as well.

The Rangers have the bye week two but are back at Springfield Reserve on Saturday 17th May against the Royals.
