Croydon’s Gridiron Victoria season is gathering momentum as the Rangers made it three successive victories with an emphatic 68-0 win over the Monash Barbarians at Springfield Reserve on Saturday.
On a wintry Melbourne day, sunshine, wind and rain all took their turn.
With a big local crowd in attendance, the Rangers were keen to set the tone early. Running back Andy Amato scored once on the ground and again in the air as the Rangers continued to rack up touchdowns.
Six-time club MVP Steve Churchill also had a touchdown on the ground and in the air.
The defence came up with some points of their own. Cody Austin intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown while rookie Rangi Smith recovered a fumble for a score.
Receivers Matt McKie and Danny Wilkes joined the party with touchdown receptions as quarterback Mark Ursu finished with four touchdown passes for the afternoon.
But, they weren’t done just yet.
Offensive tackle Taylor Gist was granted a rare carry and rushed his way into the end zone from the 30-yard line in one of the greatest plays by a Rangers lineman ever.
The boot of rookie Stefan Deleo has been on the money all season.
It was perfect again this week with nine extra-point attempts made and a field goal.
The Rangers now build some momentum through the middle of the season as they vie for the third and final playoff spot.
The Croydon Rangers will next be back at their Springfield Reserve home – Ranger Field – on Saturday, July 13.
Week 7 sees the Croydon Rangers hosting their 2nd game of the 2013 Senior Season, against the Monash Barbarians, last years division 2 runners up.
Game kicks off at 1:30pm in Springfield Reserve, Croydon.
The early game, starting at 10:30am sees the Gippsland Gladiators take on the Monash Warriors.
